Flotilla is a strange little game that will grow on you the more you play it. It seems difficult at first but once work out how to move and develop a sound strategy for the battles, you will love it. In the game you are the captain of a starship whose job it is to explore strange new worlds. Of course as you explore, there will be a chance for glory in battle. Here’s where strategy comes in to play. Learn how to use the controls to your best advantage to defeat your enemies.
The gameplay is a little complex to begin with and takes some getting used to. As a turn-based game it is one of the best I’ve seen in a long time. The enemy ships will have shields that can deflect your missiles. For the main part, the shields are weakest at the back and bottom of the ships. Lucky for you this is a fully 3D integrated environment where you can guide your ships behind and even below the enemy.
The graphics in the game are a little blocky (almost Tron-like – the original Tron), but this is understandable considering the detail that went into it to make it a 3D environment. You can tell which ships are yours, which are the enemies and where the asteroids and planets are. That’s all that matters. Wait, there’s one other thing. You want to see the missiles and the enemies exploding right? Well, that’s there too. One of the best options of this game though is the ability to zoom in on the action as it’s happening. Either above or below so you can get a good view of the missiles hitting their targets.
The sound is what threw me off the most. Classical music. Not often do you hear classical music in the background of a video game like this. It doesn’t detract from the game itself though. It adds to it. The sounds of the explosions come out nice and clear as well.
My only problem with this game though is the same problem that I have with a lot of games. The font size on the instructions. It’s very small and difficult to read. I’m not sure if it can only be one size for the Indie games or not but it’s definitely something that the developers need to look into. Definitely a must have game for everyone.
