Orbyx - Mystic Orbs of Chaos

I received an email today from Chris Henderson of HemiGames, the developer of Orbyx – Mystic Orbs of Chaos, letting me know that his game was nearing the end of the review process and wondering if I was interested in doing a pre-release review, well, obviously as you are reading this I am, so here it is.

Orbyx – Mystic Orbs of Chaos is a pachinko-style game. A what style game you may ask as I did, well, Pachinko is a Japanese game, which is a cross between a pinball machine and a video slot machine (according to Wikipedia).

I personally found Orbyx to be a cross between a pinball game and breakout. The object is to hit all the golden orbs with an aimed fireball, but also in the way are various other orbs, such as the green one’s which cause your fireball to bounce and then turn red, to be destroyed as soon as you lose your ball. A word of warning, stay away from the black orbs, they take a large chunk of your score and restore all the red orbs to green!

Within the orbs are also letters, which once you have collected them all casts a predetermined spell, such as multiple fireballs. Also amongst this is your good old pinball style bumper.

Another feature that made me liken Orbyx to breakout was the fact that there is a paddle, which for instance bounces back and forth across the bottom of the screen on the first level and is player controllable in the second level, just like in breakout.

In addition to all this, I found Orbyx to be one of the most polished XBLCG’s that I have played thus far. You can tell a great deal of work has gone into this one and I’d be surprised if it doesn’t do well on the marketplace.

To summarise, being a sucker for pinball and breakout, I really enjoyed Orbyx – Mystic Orbs of Chaos and would highly recommend that if they are your sort of games too, that you at least download the trial when it becomes available and give it a go.
